October 15, 2026

On my journey of learning everything about sensory experiences I met Eddie & Joy when I joined their course for Sound healing practitioner. When I first met Joy I already noticed we had a lot in common in the way we look at the world. Spirituality and science matter just as much. I came into the training just a bit of as the rest of the participants. I am a Shinrin Yoku guide and organize sensory experiences in nature. I thought I was going to learn about sound and how I could use my voice more confident, but it brought me so much more.

I wanted to talk about this a bit deeper and I went over for a cup of tea, and we had a deep conversation that reminded me how much of what we feel starts with what we hear.

Sound healing isn't just about creating sound, it is about creating a space where people feel comfortable and relaxed by the sounds. The first time I went to one of their sound baths, in a church, the first thing they said was this: you can lie down and close your eyes, but you don't have to. I don't have any trouble with closing my eyes. But I wanted to see what they were doing. I was curious about the instruments. And if they hadn't said it, I would have thought I wasn't allowed. That one sentence gave me room. It turned out to be the heart of everything we talked about.

##### **Explore · How it all began**

Eddie is a drummer. After four years at the conservatory in Rotterdam, he got into a burnout.
Meditation, music, and being outside slowly helped him recover.

*"On stage I felt perfectly fine, because I was playing music.
But the moment I stepped off stage, I was a wreck."*

Joy started as a dancer and singer. For years she lived on stages where it was all about perfection. "If your toes are not bleeding, you're not doing a good job," she said, describing what she had learned. She never really learned to feel her body, until yoga, and a teacher training in India, turned her life around.

Their paths collided. They started sharing what worked for them outdoors, with retreats and live music, long before sound baths were widely known here. Eddie put it simply:

*"We just collided there, and that journey is now the Sound Healing School."*

Ask them what sound healing is, and you won't get one answer. Eddie remembered the song his father played all the time, which made him cry after his grandfather died, and then feel better. "That's healing," he said. Everyone has their own experience. People try to put it in a little box. You don't have to. A box creates restrictions and restrictions take away the room to move.

##### **Move · Sound is movement**

*"Music is vibration, movement is vibration, and it just comes together."*

For me it's a cycle. Everything that vibrates moves and produces a sound, and the other way around: sound
sets things in motion. Maybe that is why a drummer and a dancer found each other so naturally. What they do together feels less like a combination than like something that was already connected.
That is why they begin every session by telling people they are free to move. Their company is even called Moving Vibrations. You can lie down, you can sway, you can stay with your eyes open. Joy's advice: "Move in a way that feels good to you. If you feel a restriction, you move within that restriction."

Eddie told me he felt resistance in the beginning, when they started doing only sound baths. "I want my music to also move people," he said. So they found a way they call flow and sound. If a vibration sets something in motion in your body and it wants to move, "then movement is healing." What your body needs also changes from day to day, and so does the sound that fits. Different rhythms do different things to the brain and the body, which is why they keep asking: what do you need right now?

It's the same with growing. Their approach is tiny baby steps, because the nervous system treats everything unfamiliar as a threat.

Even when we sit still, something moves inside us. Everything vibrates. Everything moves. And that made me wonder where sound comes from, long before it reaches us.

##### **Connect · Where sound comes from**

So we talked about the connection with nature. Many instruments are inspired by nature: the wave drum by waves, the rain shaker by rain, the flute, as they believe, by birds.

*"The sounds of nature are healing in themselves," Joy said.*

Think of the high chirping of birds in the morning. It means: time to wake up. Joy's thought is that our brain learned this over time, and that high sounds still feel energizing, while low sounds feel more grounding. A gong can remind us of thunder. And everything has a rhythm, even a creek.

I told them about the time I once heard a sound in the forest: a slow, rhythmic drumming in the distance. I went to look for where it came from, and it was a woodpecker.

For Eddie, nature was also a way back to himself. During his burnout he went outside every day. He started with five minutes at the Hofvijver in The Hague, a song he liked, looking around, smelling, the sun on his face. Sometimes only the sounds of the city around him.

*"Being present in the moment."*

##### **Remember · Sound as the first language**

Sound was our first way of connecting, long before words.

Eddie reminded me that music is also communication. Birds sing certain songs. Whales talk through tones. Tribes used drum signals to say that buffalo or rain was coming, and those signals slowly grew into songs. In West African drumming there are patterns everyone knows: when the leader plays a rhythm, you move to the next part. In Indian traditional music, you first learn to sing and speak the rhythmic language before you are allowed to play the instrument.

And think of celebration. People came together around a fire, to dance and sing when a hunt had finally succeeded, or when someone had died.

*"That's healing, right?"*

Eddie believes that this is what we have lost a bit. It used to be normal to sing. Your mother sang to you. People sang together in the community.

So is the voice an instrument too?

*"100%."*

They call it the most powerful one, and the most personal. It is free. Humming alone can relax the body. Joy described it as the physical vibration, and as expression: "It's the essence of you coming out."

I recognized the other side of it too. We can restrict our voice, because we want to be understood or are afraid of being misunderstood. Somewhere in the West we learned to be quiet in class, to raise a hand, to ask permission to speak.

My own voice is what the training taught me most about. I am a very calm person when I interact with people, and the little daily practices were really helpful in releasing my voice bit by bit.

##### **Experience · Try it yourself**

Ask them what people get wrong about sound healing, and Joy's answer was clear. It isn't the sound that heals. The sound creates the conditions for the body to heal itself. A space for the nervous system to come down. The body's own wisdom does the rest.

Eddie added something: that intuition is not enough on its own. You can't speak Spanish on intuition. Learning the language of the instruments doesn't restrict you. It gives your intuition something to sit on. And is it spiritual or scientific? Eddie's answer: both, it is deeply spiritual, and it can be understood too.

So what can you do at home?

Start with the connection you already have. Think of a song that makes you sad, and one that makes you want to dance in the rain. Notice when you feel a certain way, and what sound goes with it.

*"Everyone already has a deeper connection with sound than they think."*

Then try something small. Sit on a bench and listen to the birds. Watch a thunderstorm from your window (I do that every time). Put on a song your body likes to move on, without any choreography. Or go to a sound bath. You don't need all these instruments to help your body feel.

##### **Integrate · What they would like to pass on**

I ended with the question I always end with: what would you like to pass on?

Joy: "My wish is for people to start connecting to themselves and to other people."

For her, that is healing. Eddie hopes that connection through music, with yourself and with each other, becomes part of everyday life again.

*"If we can translate that feeling and feel it together as a collective, that's what we do this for."*

##### **What I take into Sensible Sense**

Hearing is one of the six senses in Path of the Senses. This conversation reminded me that it is also a way to move, to connect with nature, and to remember something very old. For me sound and movement can't be seen separate from each other, but just with everything in life everything is connected. And I think when we combine all that we experience through our senses we can learn to listen to the voice of our body again. And soften the thoughts in your head so that body and mind can work together like they are supposed to.

##### **Maybe it starts with something small**

Maybe you don't have to change everything.
Maybe it starts with one song.
With five minutes outside, listening.
With humming, just to feel where it goes.

Sound has been connecting people for as long as there have been people. Maybe we only need to remember. 🌿
